Redecorating your home can be an exhilarating experience, especially if you are getting new paint and flooring at once! The change is so complete, it almost feels like a new house! However, when you are having work done by two or more different contractors, it can be confusing to know whom to call first. Should you have the interior painting done first, so the painters are not walking or dripping paint on your new carpets? Or should you get the floors done first, so the floor installers don’t accidentally mess up your freshly-painted walls?
To tell the truth, there is no clear answer to this; it really depends on the specific details of your home’s current flooring, and what type of flooring you will replace it with.
Before we discuss the matter further, there is one important note to make; a high-end painting company will never mess up your new flooring, either by walking on it with dirty shoes, or by getting paint on it. This is not an eventuality you need to consider if you hire a reliable painting contractor.
Why Does It Depend on the Flooring Type?
Different types of flooring are different thicknesses, thus they meet the wall at differing heights. When you get new flooring in your home, this might require raising or lowering the height of your baseboards to accommodate the change. When this is the case, the painting definitely needs to happen after the flooring is installed.
Some types of flooring require removing the baseboards for installation or refinishing. If this happens, you should also have the painting done afterwards.
If the new floor in your home is the same thickness as the prior one, and if the baseboards are allowed to stay in place during the installation, then there is less reason to prefer one order versus another. In that case, the best thing to do is to talk with your painting company and your flooring contractor, and ask them to coordinate their services with each other.
