Restoring fine woodwork can be an exacting process, but when it needs to be done in a high-traffic part of a commercial building, it becomes even more complex! As a commercial painting company in Portland, we have had the privilege of working in many fine buildings and on many complex projects. This one, however, stands out in some unique ways!
A Challenging Painting Environment
Sundeleaf Painting has developed a reputation for our fine work with fine woodwork, whether in residential or commercial settings. Our preferred method for refinishing cabinets and other woodwork is to bring it “home” to our spray shop, where we can isolate the items and do the whole process in a dedicated environment.
On this unique staining project, however, the wood needed to stay in place since it was built in. This isn’t a problem for us, though it does make the process more challenging. What really made this wood staining process even more unique was the location where we were working: the lobby of a commercial building. At every stage of the project, we needed to keep the lobby safe and accessible for all those who use the building.
As you can see from the images, we put a lot of effort into creating and maintaining a safe, tidy environment. No one was in any danger of tripping on a tangle of cords and air hoses, nor of getting drips or overspray on them as they came through!
A Challenging Restoration Task
The woodwork in this staining project had suffered the effects of age, and it was in poor condition. As the stain and varnish began to fail, it produced a peeling and blistering surface. Our first step was to stabilize the existing finish so that it would not continue to fail.
Once the finish was brought into a stable condition, we used a unique process of gradual toning to darken the color of the wood. We achieved a rich, elegant, walnut hue that was a great improvement over the dated look of the previous golden oak color.
