For commercial buildings specifically, an experienced team is needed to create a space that supports business use while balancing durability, code requirements, and historic appearance.Specialized restoration helps preserve fragile original materials, bring the property up to modern safety codes and accessibility standards without destroying its historic integrity, and safely upgrade hidden systems like heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).What Are the Painting and Woodwork Considerations for Historic Commercial Properties? At Sundeleaf Painting, we provide specialized restoration to help historic buildings get updated while preserving their charm. Before restoration begins, the team will assess key areas to determine the best path forward, including the exterior paint, siding, trim, windows, doors, and decorative woodwork. They will also look for any moisture damage, rot, failing coatings, and previous repairs that need to be addressed. Our team will also consider several factors regarding painting and woodworking before getting started. They include:Surface preparation: The surface needs to be prepared carefully to avoid damaging any antique wallpaper or disturbing any lead paint.Coating compatibility: Certain coatings won’t be compatible with older features, while others will not complement the historic character of the building. Careful analysis is required to ensure compatibility.Finish matching: To keep a consistent look, the stain or finish should be carefully color-matched using period-appropriate colors and materials.Typically, we perform wood refinishing or repair before painting to ensure a smooth bond and prevent structural issues.
