Accent walls are in style! They are a great way to add a quick pop of color to your walls, create a focal point in the space, and can be used in virtually any room.
Of course, as with any other interior design advice, there are some do’s and don’ts, along with some general advice when adding an accent wall to your home. We’ve organized these tips to help you get started!
Define a focal point
Ask yourself what you want people to see first when they walk in the room. Sometimes this is defined by the shape of the room, or the arrangement of the furniture. Then, paint your accent color on that wall!
If your room has no obvious focal point, a great tip is to choose the wall that is the furthest away, but also the shortest width. If you choose a longer wall to accent, it can cause the walls to feel closed in and cramped.
You can also choose two walls that face each other, and paint two accent walls. If you choose this option, keep in mind that you should choose a color that will not overwhelm the space. It’s also best to avoid a wall with windows and doors.
Keep the 60/30/10 rule in mind
The purpose of the accent wall is not to be overwhelming, but to complement the room. Keep this rule in mind when you are choosing your paint colors:
-
60% of the room’s painted surfaces and decor should reflect your dominant color
-
30% of the room will focus on a secondary color (think decorations and accents)
-
10% of the room is devoted to the accent color

What is the purpose of the room?
This relates to color psychology. Different colors make us feel certain emotions. It is well known that interior designers are very strategic in their use of colors throughout the house.
When you are choosing your accent wall, choose a color that will complement the feel of the room. If you are adding your accent wall to the bedroom, consider a calming color such as blue or green. For rooms with more energy, choose a color that evokes excitement!
