In Portland, historic resources are defined as buildings, landscapes, sites, places, and districts that have or potentially have architectural, historical, or cultural significance. Certain development proposals for these resources are subject to land-use review and approval before construction can be started.Portland historic homes may be individually designated as landmarks or located within designated historic districts. If your home is considered historic, it provides unique value to the community. A poorly planned or careless renovation can easily decrease this value. This is why choosing the right painter is important: to preserve the features that make your home special. The Challenges of Historic House PaintingRepainting high-end homes is always an involved process. When working with historic properties, however, there are additional considerations. Many painters are not equipped to handle the unique challenges of historic home restoration, which include:Maintaining Unique FeaturesThe antique features are part of your historic home’s unique charm. You don’t want to see these excessively modernized or damaged by improper technique. The right painter can advise you on the best product and application options to make your home look like new without compromising its historic beauty. At Sundeleaf Painting, we have extensive experience in painting and restoring historical settings, and we understand how to follow historic best practices.Performing Hazardous CleanupWorking on historic homes may turn up hazardous materials. Many older homes feature lead-based paint, for example, or there may be mold hiding within the walls. If an inexperienced painter stirs these up, the health of your household may be at risk. Instead, seek a painter who uses the appropriate preparation and cleanup techniques to keep everybody safe. At Sundeleaf Painting, we can handle surface mold. However, if your home has toxic mold, we will help you find high-end, quality contractors who specialize in mold remediation and restoration.Using Accurate MaterialsNow it’s time to start painting. When updating the paint on your historic property, you must choose paints that are historically appropriate for its architectural style and period. Pick colors and finishes that would have been used during the time your house was built. This takes extensive research on your own, but a knowledgeable painter can guide you to the right selection. At Sundeleaf Painting, we hand-brush many surfaces to emulate a period finish that is appropriate for the home’s period.Creating a Beautiful FinishFinally, a historic home is a uniquely beautiful place to live. You want a high-quality finish that does this beauty justice. Subpar work from an amateur painter will bring down the appearance and value of your home. Instead, look for a high-end company with in-depth knowledge and a meticulous approach.
