Should I Use Satin or Eggshell Interior Paint?

If you have a house painting project on the horizon, whether you plan to do it yourself or hire a local house painter, you will need to make some choices about the paint sheen you want on your walls. But wait, isn't the color the important choice? What's the big deal with paint sheen anyways?

The sheen of a paint is the amount of reflectiveness it has. Generally, the higher the sheen, the more glossy and shiny it is. This tends to have a more resilient, washable, long-lasting finish, but it also tends to be a little too bright for most walls. Also, glossier paints often highlight the imperfections on a wall that less-glossy paints hide.

So, what is the story with Eggshell and Satin paints? Both of these sheens are middle-of-the-road choices, with more reflectivity than flat paint, but not as much as gloss or semi-gloss. That means that they strike a middle balance of having enough sheen to give a bit of a glow, and to be somewhat resilient, but they don't have enough sheen to make your wall flaws obvious.

What Is Eggshell Paint Good For?

Eggshell paint is less reflective than satin, and it is a great choice for interior painting on walls that will not receive much wear. For example, a master bedroom, a formal dining room, or a home office would do great with eggshell paint. Also, a half-bath that does not receive frequent usage by children is a good candidate.

Where to Use Satin Paint

One step down from semi-gloss, satin paint has a bit of a glow to it. It works well in full bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, living rooms, kids' bedrooms, and other areas that get high traffic, frequent moisture, or occasional scrubbing. In areas that get very wet or are prone to mildew, you can get satin paint with an anti-mildew additive, and/or go with a semi-gloss paint.
