Portland Wood Restoration: a Case Study
Posted by Sam Sundeleaf on Saturday, November 28, 2020
In a world where so many things are mass-produced and disposable, it is a breath of fresh air to find a work of real craftsmanship, one worth restoring rather than replacing. At Sundeleaf Painting, one of our specialties is wood restoration. We love taking unique items of beauty and recovering the lustre that time and use have hidden. As a case in point, we would like to take a close look at a recent Portland project: refinishing a wooden door.
Here is the door as it was when we first arrived.
As you can see, the wood is in good structural shape, and its design is a showpiece of classic beauty. However, the finish has turned a dull amber, and there is a lot of damage on the surface, especially at the bottom-right corner.
Spray Shop for Wood Restoration
If you have read our blog in the past, you know that our custom spray shop for wood restoration and refinishing is our pride and joy. It is one of the main things that sets us apart from other painting companies in the Portland region. To give this special door the treatment it deserves, we removed it from its frame and brought it to our shop.
The first step in refinishing this wood door was to sand away the previous stain and clear coat. This takes extreme care and patience, especially on the details like the raised circles and the window trim.
Once the previous finish was removed, we carefully taped off the hardware and edges, and began applying a rich, new color of stain. After the necessary number of paint coats, we applied a protective finish. This newly-protected door will now endure against our Portland weather for many more seasons!
The Finshed Product
Once the coatings had all dried, we brought the door back to its home and reinstalled it in place. Everyone was thrilled to see it, full of natural beauty and class!
