Is More Expensive Paint worth the Investment? - Tips for Portland Home Painters

To a large degree, consumers live in a “cheaper is better” world.
If the price of a box of cereal is a little depressing, the store brand is right there to perk you back up (it might taste a little different, but it’s worth it… maybe).
If you want to save six or seven dollars on that classic novel, the paperback version is next to the hardcover.
With this kind of focus on savings, it stands to reason that you might occasionally question the value of your interior or exterior paint. The big brands can be significantly more expensive! And, when you want to keep your painting budget to a minimum, the cheaper options suddenly look very, very attractive.
What's the Difference between Cheap and Expensive Paint?
One of the primary differences is found in the quality of the ingredients. Specifically, the resins (binding agents) in higher-grade paint are simply better at doing their job. This translates to a longer-lasting finish.
Lower-quality paint also consists of more solvent. This might not seem like a problem until the paint is actually applied, dried, and the solvents that carry the pigment and resin evaporate. Suddenly the coverage becomes much thinner, as opposed to the higher-grade paint that has less solvent and therefore does not change as drastically once the paint is cured.
What Does Higher Quality Paint Really Offer?
- More even coverage
- Fewer coats are needed
- More attractive
- Fewer fillers
- Finer pigments
Do You Always Need Expensive Paint?
In the end, we’re talking about your home and your wallet. You always have the final say! If you are painting a busy section of your home where fingerprints, smudges, and wall scrubbing are a part of life, investing in quality paint might be worth it.
If, on the other hand, you’re painting the back room and simply want to cover over that original color that has been driving you crazy, a cheaper paint might suit your needs.
