You may love the look of painted cabinetry, but will that finish stand the test of time?
We get it. Your kitchen is the central hub of your home, and it sees a LOT of action. Got kids? Say no more. Avid cook? Spray, splatters, and residue tend to appear, no matter how careful you are.
You need a cabinet finish that looks awesome (obviously), but also can be wiped down, scrubbed when you hit a tough stain, and stand up to a lot of… love.
So, are painted kitchen cabinets durable? Yes and no. Keep reading to see what we mean.
The Dangers of Low-Quality Cabinet Painting
A lot of painters claim to be able to paint cabinets, but very few know how to do it correctly. And even fewer specialize in the process, with a proven track record.
Worse yet, some homeowners assume that the process must be straightforward (how hard can it be, right?), and dive into cabinet painting as a DIY home improvement project. A day or two into the process and regret starts to set in, especially as you deal with uneven finishes, strange textures, and a very homemade look overall.
You get the point.
If cabinet painting isn’t done correctly, it just won’t last. Even if it looks okay, it’s not going to perform the way you need it to since that paint wasn’t built on a strong foundation.
Do Professionally Painted Cabinets Hold Up?
If your cabinet painter really knows what they’re doing, then yes. Here’s what you should watch for:
- A clear description of their approach and process
- A dedicated space for cabinet painting (ideally a fully-equipped, off-site spray shop)
- Premium paint products, with a clear answer for which paints they use and why
- Project photos from past kitchens they’ve painted
- Happy client testimonials
- A reasonable warranty
Let’s camp out on the last point for a minute. A long warranty can be attractive, but it can also be a red flag. Does your painter have the local longevity and credibility to really offer such a long warranty, or is there a chance that they won’t be around to honor it? Or is it riddled with loopholes and conditions?
A reasonable warranty with clear terms exudes confidence and experience. That’s what you want.
